Glossary of Terms 
AlphanumericA combination of alphabetic and numeric characters. This is used to provide better security to your RingCentral online account.
After HoursThe hours you're not working or when your business is closed.  See also, User Hours.
Assisted ProvisioningA feature that allows you to set up your supported IP phone automatically through your RingCentral online account
ATAAnalog Telephone Adapter; An ATA usually takes the form of a small box with a power adapter. This allows you to use your regular Analog phone to place VOIP calls.
Auto-ReceptionistAn automated attendant or Virtual receptionist
BandwidthIs a total volume that can be transferred across a given transmission line in a given period of time usually measured in bits per second.
Bridge number or Dial-in numberThe phone number that connects you to the RingCentral Conferencing line.  You can use a local US-based Dial-in Number or an International Dial-in number to connect to RingCentral Conferencing.  This number is sometimes called a bridge number, but we'll always use Dial-In Number here.

Cable ModemA cable modem is a device that enables you to hook up your PC to a local cable TV line and receive data at about 1.5 Mbps.
Call FlipThe ability to seamlessly transfer a live call from one phone to another without interrupting the call.  You can set up the phones you want to make available for call flipping from your RingCentral online account.
Call Forwarding or ForwardingIs an essential feature in any business phone system. It lets you take calls anywhere you are by routing them to the number that you are currently using.
Call HandlingAll the different ways you want to respond to your calls, such as transfer to other phones, play a recorded announcement, send directly to voicemail, and more.  RingCentral has very flexible settings to help you manage every call that comes in.
Call screening or ScreeningA way for you to find out who is calling you before you picks up the phone so you can decide how you want to respond to the caller.  You can screen callers by having them announce their name or by viewing their phone number on your Caller ID display.
Called NumberThe phone number the caller dialed to reach you. You can have this number shown on your Caller ID display.
Caller IDNames or numbers displayed on your phone to help your callers identify you, and also, to help you identify who is on the line. In RingCentral, you can determine your Caller ID information for both outbound and inbound calls.
Calling CreditTwo things "Included Calling Credit and Purchased Calling Credit" Included Calling Credit is a Calling Credit from your Service Plan, Purchased Calling Credit is which you will buy for international calls.
Call MonitoringCall Monitoring enables you to improve your business' call monitoring capabilities by providing features that allow you to check the quality of calls taken by your colleagues. With monitor, whisper, barge, and takeover you can either check the call, join the call, or take over the call.
CNAMAlso called the Caller ID Name.  This is used to identify the caller right before you answer the call.
Conference callA call where multiple people on multiple phones connect together on the same call so they can have discussions.  Each person dials into a central conferencing line and can hear all the other people who call in to the same line. Conference calls are audio-only connections.
Connect prompt or connection greetingThe recorded message your callers hear to let them know the call is about to be connected to your extension. For example: "Please hold while I try to connect you."
Cover PageThis is the first page sent through the fax to introduce your attachment and can include your personal contact information and instructions.
desktop appA RingCentral app that you can download to your desktop to monitor your calls and to use as your primary RingCentral tool for faxing.  A software program for making telephone calls over the Internet using a general purpose computer, rather than using a real telephone.
DHCPDynamic Host Control Protocol (DHCP) is a method for automating the assignment of IP addresses and other networking information.
DigitalLineVirtual line assigned to an extension or device.
Direct NumberDirect Inward Dialing function
DSLA Digital Subscriber Line is a fast continuously available internet connection that uses a phone line
DSL modemThis is a piece of hardware required to get a high speed broadband service, it can give speeds up to 512Kbps downstream and 256Kbps upstream.
E911 Dialing AddressThe actual physical address where you're using the phone.  This is the address emergency responders will visit when you call 911 for help.  Whenever you move the phone to a different physical location, please remember to update this section so emergency responders can find you.
Ethernet CableCAT5 Category 5 UTP Cable - used for connecting computer networks
ExtensionThe phone number assigned to you for internal calls with your colleagues on the same phone network (usually in the office). As opposed to your 10-digit direct phone number used for external calls.
Fax Station IdentifierDetails commonly shown in the top header of the cover page to quickly identify who is sending the fax.  Most of the time it's just the fax number, but you can personalize it with your company name and number.  For example, Joe's Auto Body Shop: 800-555-1212.
FaxOutThe tool you use to send outgoing faxes when you’re working in your RingCentral online account.  Sending a fax straight from your online account means that you can fax from any location with Internet access. You can also fax from Outlook, your personal email account, your Call Controller tool, Windows applications, and straight from your RingCentral Fax software.
FirewallA firewall is a piece of hardware or software program which protects a computer or network from attacks from intruders and hackers.
GlipGlip is a real time productivity app that allows you to make your team more productive by offering multiple solutions in one place.
Global OfficeRingCentral Global Office provides a single phone system to multi-national companies that have offices around the world. This phone system is cloud-based and can be used on desktop apps, deskphones as well as mobile apps, simplifying the management of the phone system across all international branch offices.

Account administrators can setup the RingCentral Global Office. To do this, an Administrator can add a phone, add a User, or add a Shared Line Group via the online account.
Greetings or user greetingsThe recorded message your callers hear when they connect to your phone.  This is not your voicemail greeting; it’s a courtesy welcome announcement.  For example: “Thank you for calling <your name>”
GroupsGroups, formerly known as Departments, enable you to designate a group of employees with similar activities
or services.  Features allow you to handle call queues, shared lines and paging.
HD VoiceHigh-Definition Voice or HD Voice allows you to establish calls between supported RingCentral Desk Phones, desktop app and mobile app with high quality voice audio.

This feature is enabled automatically and is available to RingCentral Office Premium and Enterprise customers in US, Canada & UK.
Head-Up DisplayHead-Up Display or HUD is an interface feature found on the RingCentral desktop app that allows you to manage your extensions' presence and Call Monitoring from the RingCentral desktop app.
HIPAAThe Office for Civil Rights enforces the HIPAA (Health Information Privacy) Rule, which protects the privacy of individually identifiable health information; the HIPAA Security Rule, which sets national standards for the security of electronic protected health information; and the confidentiality provisions of the Patient Safety Rule, which protect identifiable information being used to analyze patient safety events and improve patient safety.
Hold MusicDuring a call, when you have to put a caller on hold, the music you play to help them pass the time until you can get back to them.
HostThe person who starts a RingCentral Conferencing call.  Hosts also have access to commands to help manage the call.
Host code or Host Access codeUsed interchangeably.  The unique code you use when dialing in to RingCentral Conferencing to start a call as the Host.
Incoming or InboundAny information, fax, or call initiated by someone else to your phone.
IntercomA way for people to call you and you pick up the call in convenient hands-free, speakerphone-mode. Intercom is often used by receptionists to notify you of events, like letting you know your customer is waiting in the lobby.
International CallingTerm used for dialing other countries or outside of your country.
IP AddressIs a numerical label assigned to each device (e.g., computer, printer) participating in a computer network that uses the Internet Protocol for communication.
IP PhoneA VoIP phone or IP Phone uses Voice over IP (Voice over Internet Protocol - VoIP) technologies for placing and transmitting telephone calls over an IP network, such as the Internet, instead of the traditional public switched telephone network (PSTN).
IP PhoneUses Voice over IP technologies allowing telephone calls to be made over an IP network such as the internet instead of the ordinary PSTN system. Calls can traverse the Internet, or a private IP Network such as that of a company.
IPCONFIGA utility that provides for querying, defining, and managing IP addresses within a network
LANA local area network (LAN) is a computer network covering a small physical area, like a home, office, or small group of buildings, such as a school, or an airport
Local NumberUsed for domestic calling with Area code, Prefix and Phone number
Manual ProvisioningManual of process of preparing and equipping a network to allow it to provide (new) services to its users.
MessagesRefers to any voicemail and faxes you receive.
ModemA device that allows computers to exchange data over phone lines. It transmits digital data over telephone wires by modulating the data into an audio signal to send it and demodulating an audio signal into data to receive it.
Multi LineIs a feature that allows multiple telephone lines going into a business to act as a single group, called a hunt group.
NotificationsEmail or text messages that alert you to missed calls, voicemail, faxes, or other activities on your phone line.
Online SignatureAn image of your real signature scanned and stored on your laptop as a graphic file (such as, .bmp, .gif, .tif) so you can add it when you want to sign a fax.
Outgoing or outboundAny information, fax, or call you make to another person.
ParticipantThe person who joins a conference call already in progress.  There can be up to 1000 Participants on a call.
Participants code or Participant Access codeUsed interchangeably.  The unique code you use when dialing in to RingCentral Conferencing call to join a call already in progress.  Each Host will send you the Participants code to use that is valid for that call only.
Port ForwardingPort forwarding, sometimes referred to as port mapping, is the act of forwarding a network port from one network node to another.
Port TriggeringA type of port forwarding where outbound traffic on predetermined ports sends inbound traffic to specific incoming ports.
Porting or Number TransferTransferring of number from one carrier to another
PresenceIndicator lights available on some phone models that let you monitor the phone-use status of your colleagues so you can see when someone is on a call, not on a call, or on hold.
QoSQuality of Service – is the idea that transmission rates, error rates, and other characteristics can be measured, improved and to some extent, guaranteed in advance. QoS is of particular concern for the continuous transmission of high bandwidth video and multimedia information.
RingCentral Online AccountYour account stored on our RingCentral service website where you can manage your calling, messaging, and faxing activity, and set your communication preferences.  The RingCentral site is: https://service.ringcentral.com/.  You can log in with your RingCentral username and password. 
RingMeClick to call service that allows your customers to call your company by clicking on your phone number displayed in a website.
RingOutMake calls by clicking any number in your online account, including contacts, messages, and call logs.
RJ11A telephone connector that holds up to six wires. RJ-11 is the common connector used to plug a telephone into the wall and also plug the handset into the telephone.
RouterA device that forwards data packets from one local area network (LAN) or wide area network (WAN) to another
Rule or Call Handling RuleA custom call forwarding sequence that you can set up that will be activated based on a date, time, or phone number.  For example, you can create a Rule to specify how you want your calls forwarded on holidays when you’re closed.
Single Sign-OnSingle Sign-on or SSO allows employees in a company to access all the company application with one set of credentials. Depending on the company, the credentials can include email, phone number or username along with the password. The company routes all logins through an IDP (Identity Provider) with which the company has a purchased license. The IDP usually hosts a login page for the employees to enter their company credentials before entering any application. Single Sign On provides better security with the central authentication point, limiting the possibility of phishing.
SmartphoneUsed here to refer to the RingCentral mobile app that you can download so you can use RingCentral features on your mobile phone.  Not your actual, full-featured mobile phone.
SoftkeyIs a button on your IP phone, flexibly programmable to invoke any of the functions rather than being associated with a single fixed function or a fixed set of functions.
StampsStamps are small images, like arrows, happy faces, or Confidential labels that you can place on your fax or cover page.  You can create your own or use one from the RingCentral stamp library.
TaxIs a financial charge or other levy imposed upon a taxpayer (an individual or legal entity) by a state or the functional equivalent of a state such that failure to pay is punishable by law.
TCPTransmission Control Protocol. A protocol developed for the Internet to get data from one network device to another.
Text-to-speechRingCentral can read the text entered in some name fields, and verbally announce them in recorded messages.  In these fields, you can spell out your name the way it sounds (phonetic pronunciation) to help the system operator pronounce it correctly.
Toll Free NumberFreecall, Freephone, 800, 0800 or 1-800 numbers is a special telephone number which is free for the calling party, and instead the telephone carrier charges the called party for the cost of the call. A toll-free number is identified by a service access code, from a dialing prefix range similar to a geographic area code, such as "800". The specific service access numbers can vary by country.
Touch-tone commandsTools to help a Host manage a conference call, such as mute or block people from the call.  Commands are accessed by pressing a combination of touch-tone keys on your phone keypad.
UDPUser Datagram Protocol. It is a connectionless protocol in that UDP makes no provision for acknowledgment of packets received.
Unconditional ForwardingThe ability to transfer the call to a different phone number without having to go through your greetings, as if you’re not using a company line.  This option is useful when you want the call to go directly to your personal phone, and then roll to your personal voicemail.
URLUniform Resource Locator - specifies where the identified resource is available and the protocol for retrieving it.
User HoursThe hours you're in the office, on-duty, or when your business is open.  See also, After Hours.
Vanity NumberPhonewords are mnemonic phrases represented as alphanumeric equivalents of a telephone number.
VoIPAlso called Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP). It is a methodology and group of technologies for the delivery of voice communications and multimedia sessions over Internet Protocol (IP) networks, such as the Internet.
WANWide Area Network - is a network of linked computers covering a multi-site, national or even global area.
