How Sending to Multiple Recipients Work (Scope and Limitations)

RingCentral Plans

Sending a text/SMS/MMS to a number outside of the account's company directory is only available to RingCentral US and Canadian accounts. RingCentral UK accounts can only send text/SMS/MMS to internal contacts (within the account).

Company contacts / Internal contacts (within the account)

A text message/SMS/MMS sent to multiple contacts within the account's company directory (Internal contacts, also known as Company contacts) will be sent as a "group message" where all recipients can view and reply to all messages in the message thread. Recipients cannot be removed or added once the group message thread has been created.

Call Queue Group (within the account)

A text message/SMS/MMS sent to a Call Queue Group in the account automatically creates a group message thread where all members of the group can view and reply to all messages. Recipients cannot be removed or added once the group message thread has been created.

Personal contacts (External contacts)

A text message/SMS/MMS sent to multiple numbers outside of the account's company directory (External contacts, also known as Personal contacts) will be sent to each recipients individually, will not create a group message thread, and will be logged as individual messages sent to each recipients. The recipient will view the message as if it was sent directly from the sender, will not know that the same message was sent to another number, thus, can only reply to the sender.

Company contacts and Personal contacts (within and outside the account)

If a text message/SMS/MMS is sent to multiple Company contacts and numbers outside of the account, the message sent to Company contacts will be sent as a group and create a group message thread. The group message thread will not include the external recipients. The message intended for each of the external recipients will be separated from the group, sent and logged individually and will not create a group thread. The recipient will view the message as if it was sent directly from the sender, will not know that the same message was sent to another number, thus, can only reply to the sender.

Group Messaging on RingCentral App (Glip)

RingCentral App (Glip) allows Users to create a group message thread between Company and Personal contacts. A User can add members to the Glip group's thread by searching for a company contact's name in the directory, or by typing the email address of a user outside of the company. External contacts will need to either install the Glip app or check their email to receive and reply to a message from the Glip group. For more information, go to RingCentral App (Glip) - Teams and Groups overview.
