How to find/launch program

1. Press [Command] + [Spacebar] to bring up Spotlight search tool.
2. Search for desired application (ie “Network Utility”) and press [Enter].
3. Navigate to appropriate area with above tabs.

Activity Monitor

This application will report basic network statistics for any given application in use. There is also a graph that shows a host of network activity metrics. This would be most useful in confirming that data is being sent/received by the desktop app. In addition, this is also where you can force quit the desktop app if it has stopped responding. Just highlight the application and press the Stop/X button in the top left corner.

Network Utility

There is a great amount of data one may obtain using this tool. For our purposes, take note of the “Info”, “Ping” and “Traceroute” tabs.

Info

Provides basic information regarding the network interface being used and transmission stats. The drop-down menu allows you to toggle between interfaces. This differs from Activity monitor stats in that send/receive errors and collisions are logged.

Ping

This tool is used to ping a destination. I recommend setting it to a high number of pings in order for the packet loss report to generate below once it has finished. As you scroll through the pings, you will be able to see if the packets are dropping or any sudden spikes in latency.

Traceroute

Allows you to see the hops associated with any given route, as well as corresponding latency measurements. This tool is valuable for troubleshooting issues that are suspected to be outside the local network.

Terminal

Terminal is Apple’s version of the command line prompt. Launch the application by performing a Spotlight search.  Once Terminal is open, type “nettop” and press [Enter].

This command provides some great information involving applications and their connection to the internet, as well as real-time updates on the status of those applications. This would be helpful for troubleshooting RingCentral Desktop App, and provides data on the ports utilized, interface being used, private IP address, status, return trip latency, etc. 

 

 

1. Go to the /Applications/Utilities folder and start the Terminal application.
2. Type traceroute -S -q 30 199.255.120.184 > ~/Desktop/pathping.txt
3. Press Return. A file will be created on your Desktop called pathping.txt.
4. Quit the Terminal application.
